SAN LORENZO & GATUN LOCKS Protecting the coast of Panama from pirates, Fort San Lorenzo was constructed recommended by Juan Bautista Antonelli, an italian engineer, who was commissioned by King Phillip II of Spain. Fort San Lorenzo was built in a high mountain at the entry of River Chagres and was an essential communication route between the two oceans that would link Spain with the recently conquered lands of Peru and Bolivia. The sea view from this place is delightful. The Gatun Locks is for sure the best place along the Panama Canal where you can watch the transit of enormous vessels crossing the canal day by day. Only 20 feet will separate you from the vessels. From one spot you’ll see the three chambers, from the sea to the Gatun Lake.
